Why We Are Wired to Be Wrong
It begins in ordinary moments.
It begins when we defend a long-held belief despite contradictory evidence. When we dismiss an uncomfortable perspective before fully hearing it. When we instinctively categorize someone as "misguided" because they challenge a story that helps us feel secure.
The executive, the activist, the professor, the parent, the neighbor, and the citizen are all susceptible to the same inheritance.
To the human nervous system, ambiguity is not an intellectual puzzle. It is a biological vulnerability. When we encounter the unknown, our survival programming takes over.
We don't cling to rigid ideologies because we lack intelligence. We cling to them because we are desperately trying to stay safe. Certainty acts as a somatic soothing mechanism—it tells our body that we understand the terrain, that we belong, and that we are safe.
But the danger lies in what happens when those stories harden into armor.
The difference is not the existence of the pattern. The difference is the scale at which the pattern can express itself.
Power does not create the need for certainty. Power amplifies it.
